What to expect from counselling

Starting Your Counselling Journey

Beginning counselling does not mean you need to know exactly what you want to talk about. Our first session provides an opportunity to get to know one another, discuss what has brought you to counselling and explore what you hope to gain from the experience.

Together, we can identify your needs and agree on an approach that feels appropriate for you.

During our sessions, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Talk openly about your thoughts and feelings.
  • Explore experiences that may be affecting your present life.
  • Develop a better understanding of yourself.
  • Identify personal strengths and coping strategies.
  • Work towards meaningful changes at a pace that feels comfortable.

Counselling is a collaborative process. You remain at the centre of your journey, and we work together towards your goals.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have a mental health problem to attend counselling?

No. Counselling can be helpful even when you are not experiencing a mental health condition. You may simply want to understand yourself better, explore personal challenges or improve your general wellbeing.

What if I don’t know what to talk about?

That is absolutely fine. You do not need to prepare anything. We can begin wherever you feel comfortable and explore things together.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. Sessions are confidential, subject to professional and legal limits, including situations involving serious risk of harm or safeguarding concerns. These will be explained before we begin.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your individual needs and goals. Some people benefit from short-term counselling, while others prefer longer-term support. We can review your progress together.

What therapeutic approach do you use?

I work integratively, drawing on person-centred, CBT and psychodynamic approaches depending on your needs.

How much does a session cost?

Your first 30-minute initial consultation is free. After that, each session costs £40 and lasts 50 minutes.

How do online sessions work?

Sessions take place online via Zoom, Google Meet or a phone call, whichever feels most comfortable for you. I will send you the details when I confirm your appointment.

How quickly will you reply to my enquiry?

I reply to all emails and enquiries within 24 hours.
